Note: These rankings are based on unrounded totals which virtually eliminates ties between players or teams

* The Chargers are our No. 1 team both on offense and in the overall rankings. On a per-play basis, their offense is netting the most value. As the PDF shows, they’re the best passing team so far, the 9th-best rushing team, the 7th-best receiving team, and the 10th-best blocking team. No other team is Top 10 in all four units.

The next-closest team offenses, the Cardinals and Jaguars, are well behind.

* The Browns are the No. 1 defensive team, just ahead of the Bills because both their pass rush and run defense have been the NFL’s best so far. But the Browns rank 10th overall because their offense ranks 30th.

* Justin Herbert and Trevor Lawrence are tied for the lead in Total Points among quarterbacks. Bijan Robinson leads at running back. Puka Nacua is the No. 1 receiver at the moment. Last year’s leaders were Joe Burrow, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Brian Thomas, respectively.

* The defensive end leader in Total Points is Nick Bosa. But his brother Joey is actually No. 1 on a per-snap basis. Jonathan Greenard led defensive ends last year. Cornerback at the moment is basically a tie between Christian Benford and Nashon Wright, with Benford ahead by a fraction of a point (Total Points is typically rounded off). Last year’s leaders among cornerbacks were Pat Surtain II and Marlon Humphrey.

* If you want to see the Total Points leaders among offensive linemen, defensive tackles, linebackers, kickers, and punters, download the PDF atop the document.

Stafford and Josh Allen have each completed 5-of-7 deep pass attempts. Brock Purdy has the highest completion percentage on them. He’s completed 3-of-4.

* Through two games Jonathan Taylor leads all running backs in yards after contact. He’s rushed for 236 yards in total, 169 coming after contact, 23 more than the next-closest player, Derrick Henry. Taylor has 12 broken and missed tackles, 2 shy of Bijan Robinson’s NFL-leading 14.

* Trey Hendrickson’s 15 pressures lead the NFL. He led the league with 85 last season, 13 more than the runner-up, Jared Verse. The early leaders in pressure percentage are Nik Bonitto (32%) and Baron Browning (31%).

*In terms of pressures above expectation (pressures generated beyond an expectation determined by alignment and situation), Bonitto is the early leader. He has 12 pressures, well more than the 5.5 he’d be expected to have based on the factors we just noted.

* Jamel Dean has allowed 5 completions on 14 targets. The 36% completion percentage against him is currently the lowest in the NFL for any cornerback (open the PDF to see the full leaderboard)

Matchups and Mismatches

When we look at matchups by unit and compare the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week. The Total Points PDF has this for each game in the NFL in a given week.

You can also find much of this information at the SIS DataHubPro.

Here are some things we noticed:

(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)

* The Dolphins rank last in the NFL in pass coverage, which doesn’t bode well going up against Josh Allen and the Bills.

* The Jaguars have the No. 3 pass offense and No. 3 blocking unit. The Texans have the No. 5 pass rush, so that should be a good matchup, but through two games, they’re 27th in Pass Coverage.

* Colts QB Daniel Jones is off to a great start, but so is the Titans pass coverage unit, which ranks No. 1 in the NFL through two games.

* The Vikings rank No. 2 in both receiving and blocking. They’re going up against a Bengals team that thus far ranks 28th in pass rush, and 31st in pass coverage (not to mention 32nd in run defense).
