It’s our weekly look at leaderboards for our all-encompassing player value stat, Total Points, and some of the stats that our operations team charts throughout the season. Plus, we give you a look at how each matchup this week stacks up with head-to-head comparisons of the teams for their different units.
You can download the full set of stats above. You will get the most out of this e-mail if you download and study the PDFs linked above and read our commentary below.

Think of this as a guide to who the most valuable players at each position are, as well as a power ranking as to which teams are faring best in different aspects of play.

Note: These rankings are based on unrounded totals which virtually eliminates ties between players or teams.
* Five teams have both an offense and a defense that ranks in the Top 10 in Total Points Per Play - the Rams (1st and 10th), Broncos (9th and 3rd), Seahawks (6th and 6th), Lions (2nd and 9th), and Bills (3rd and 8th).
The Packers (5th and 11th) just miss out.
* Yes, that is Broncos QB Bo Nix ranking No. 1 in Total Points ahead of Patrick Mahomes. There aren't any quarterbacks close to either of them. Nix having the 2nd-lowest sack percentage in the league helps his Total Points rating considerably.
* If you open the PDFs atop this email, you'll see that the Bears have the positional leader in Total Points at guard (Joe Thuney) and tackle (Darnell Wright), and have the No. 2 center (Drew Dalman). They're all contenders for the NFL's Protector of the Year award, which our Anthony Haage wrote about this week.
*You'll also see the positional dominance of the Titans' defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, whose 49 Total Points leads the NFL at that position, 20 more than the next-closest player, Chris Jones of the Chiefs.
* If you want to see the Total Points leaders among offensive linemen, defensive tackles, linebackers, kickers, and punters, download the PDF within the e-mail.

* The NFL's most successful deep passer by our Independent QB Rating this season has been Matthew Stafford. Of his 50 such passes this season, 30 have been on-target. He's 27-of-52 completing those throws and is one of only two quarterbacks to complete more than half their throws (Sam Darnold). Stafford has 7 touchdowns on throws more than 20 yards downfield, 1 shy of the team lead, and no interceptions.
Independent QB Rating is scaled similar to the NFL’s QB rating but takes into account what a QB can and can’t control. A QB isn’t penalized for dropped passes but is penalized for dropped interceptions.
* Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean ranks second among cornerbacks in completion percentage against (33%), second in yards per coverage snap (just shy of the top spot), and third at the position in Total Points (44). The only cornerback with a lower completion percentage against is James Pierre of the Steelers, though Dean has been targeted 39 times in 11 games to Dean's 24 in 9 games.
Matchups and Mismatches
When we look at matchups by unit and compare the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week. The Total Points PDF has this for each game in the NFL in a given week.
You can also find much of this information at the SIS DataHub Pro.
Here are some things we noticed:
(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)
* One thing the Rams could take advantage of against the Lions: The Rams rank 1st overall in run blocking. The Lions run defense ranks 31st.
The Rams also pose a challenge to the Lions in that they rank 4th in pass coverage. The Lions rank 6th in passing and 2nd in receiving.
* Bills-Patriots should be a fantastic game. The Bills rank in the top half of the NFL in every unit we measure (passing, rushing, receiving, pass blocking, run blocking, run defense, pass rush, pass coverage).
They're facing a Patriots team whose receiving ranks 3rd overall and whose pass coverage ranks 2nd.
* Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are hanging by a thread playoff-wise. They could be challenged by their options against the Chargers, who rank 4th in run defense and 6th in pass coverage.
* On Monday Night Football, the Dolphins rushing ranks 2nd overall and has a significant edge on the Steelers' run defense, which ranks 25th.
